Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime lost to Andrey Rublev in the final of the Madrid Open

Andrey Rublev defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets on Sunday to win the Madrid Open for the first time.

Rublev won 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 after Auger-Aliassime double-faulted in the final point of the clay-court tournament in the Spanish capital.

It was eighth-ranked Rublev's second Masters 1000 title. The 26-year-old Russian also won in Monte Carlo last year. Auger-Aliassime played in his first final at this level.

Rublev enters Madrid on a four-game losing streak after early exits from Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo and Barcelona. One of his wins in Madrid was against home favorite Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals.

He now has 16 career titles, and two this season after Hong Kong in January. He went 5-1 against Auger-Aliassime, including a singles win on clay.

Auger-Aliassime's run to the final saw second-seeded Yannick Sinner pull out with an injury before the quarter-finals, while Jiri Lehecka pulled out against the Canadian in the first set of the semi-finals.

There were other injuries in the men's draw in Madrid, starting with Novak Djokovic's pre-tournament withdrawal. Daniil Medvedev retired in the quarter-finals, while Alcaraz suffered a right hand injury and Rafael Nadal withdrew from what could be his last appearance for his country.

Iga Sviatek won the women's title for the first time in her career on Saturday.
