Brian Mulroney's state funeral paid tribute to the former leader and family man

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal. Prior to the ceremony, a funeral cortege, including a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) escort, Canadian Armed Forces escort and honor guard, Royal Canadian Air Force Band and RCMP drivers will make their way to Notre-Dame. The ceremony will have a religious component led by the Archbishop of Montreal, the Most Reverend Christian Lepin, celebrated by Miguel Castellanos, PSS, Rector of Notre Dame Basilica, and the Reverend Monsignor Francis Coyle, CSS, Pastor of St. Patrick's Cathedral. This includes prayers, readings, hymns and communion.

What are the honors of state funerals?

• The Government of Canada National Flag of Canada will be flown at half-mast on the Peace Tower and all federal buildings and institutions across Canada from February 29, 2024 until sunset on March 23, the day of the funeral.

• Federal state funerals in Canada are held to honor and commemorate current or former Governors General, current or former Prime Ministers, and sitting members of the Ministry. In addition, any prominent Canadian may be given a state funeral at the Prime Minister's discretion.
