About 100 firefighters are battling a five-alarm blaze at the vacant CDN-NDG building

A five-alarm fire investigation has been completed at a vacant three-story building on rue Robert-Burns near rue Côte-Saint-Luc in the Côte-de-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grace district. Montreal Fire Department to the Montreal Police Department Fire Squad.

Police spokeswoman Caroline Chevrefils said Sunday afternoon that police patrolling the area noticed smoke coming from the building at about 4:30 a.m. and called the fire department for help.

Once firefighters gained access to the interior, they were able to determine that the fire was intentionally set, he said. The investigation was turned over to the fire department around noon Sunday.

The first floor of the empty building used to be commercial establishments, while the second and third floors were residential.

The fire started on the second floor and spread to the third floor and the roof, said George Belé, a spokesman for the fire department, Service de sécurité incindie de Montréal.

According to him, more than 100 firefighters are needed. The fire was brought under control by Sunday afternoon, but is still burning.

The building sustained heavy damage, Chevrefils said, adding that firefighters will be able to enter the building to analyze the scene once the intervention is complete and the scene is safe. The investigation is still ongoing.
