A police officer was shot and killed in northeast Calgary, one suspect is dead and another is in custody

A Calgary police officer has been shot northeast of Falconridge.

At a media availability Wednesday evening, Calgary Police Service (CPS) Acting Deputy Chief Cliff O'Brien said the officer is in stable condition and has been released from hospital.

One suspect was also shot. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Another suspect was arrested.

O'Brien said the shooting occurred at 5220 Fallsbridge Dr. NE in the parking lot Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m., while police were executing a high-danger warrant.

“During the attempted arrest of the individual, a shootout occurred, resulting in one officer and one suspect being shot,” O'Brien said.

O'Brien said the suspects had previously been involved in other crimes involving firearms, so the CPS tactical unit was present at the time of the incident.

O'Brien said there were several civilians who saw the shooting, but there was no immediate threat to public safety.

He said that several police officers from different departments also witnessed these incidents.

“There were many witnesses to this rough and disturbing incident … it's an emotional day.”

O'Brien said he is confident the suspect will face charges while he is in police custody.

The KKK would not release the name of the officer who was shot or what unit he was in, but said he had 11 years in the force.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was called in to investigate.
