A Calgary bobsled survivor talks about the tragedy

Carter Soriano was shocked to learn that two old school friends were among the six survivors of Saturday morning's horrific crash at Canada Olympic Park that claimed the lives of twin brothers.

“It was honest,” Soriano told CBC News Sunday.

“The school we went to is like a family. It's a really small school. Everyone knows each other.”

Soriano graduated from Heritage Christian Academy in 2012, where he met Mark Lyons and Caleb Hettinga.

He coached Lyon in basketball, played games with Hettinga, and counts both as friends.

“I had to teach him the basics of basketball,” Soriano said of Lyon.

“He just had a desire to learn. He was a very coachable guy.”

Soriano says he often played one-on-one with Hettinga, who was “a really, really good basketball player, probably better than me, to be honest.”

According to him, the whole incident in bobsled is sad.

“I can only imagine what they're going through right now.”

“Two of their friends died at the scene and six others were seriously injured. I can't even imagine their feelings or what they were going through.” Soriano said.

“I'm just grateful they're alive and still kicking.”
