Montreal hired St.Louis on an interim basis in February 2022 after Dominique Ducharme was fired.

The 48-year-old Canadian was named head coach at the end of that season, his first role on the NHL bench. He posted a 75-100-26 record as coach while the Canadiens were undergoing a rebuild.

The Canadiens have missed the playoffs the past three seasons. They finished in last place in the Atlantic Division this season with a record of 30-36-16.

Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018, St.Louis won the 2004 Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning and the 2004 Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's MVP. He finished his career in 2015 with 1,033 points.
