There are no problems with the social acceptability of the Northvolt battery project, the province's environment minister, Benoit Charette, told a legislative committee on Wednesday.

Charette was answering questions from opposition MNAs about the controversial project, which has been making headlines for months.

However, these questions are often met with silence from the minister, who has refused to answer many questions as the project is being contested in the courts.

“We have a problem of social acceptability,” said Alejandra Zaga Mendez, a member of Quebec's NSC, demanding that the Bureau of Environmental Protection (BAPE) hold hearings to answer all citizens' questions.

“The project is widely supported, I don't think there is a problem of social acceptability,” Charette said, referring to polls.

“There are people who have questions, they may be concerned, and that's perfectly legitimate in a democracy, but in reality, those people are probably given more votes.”
