Gas in Ontario, including the GTA, will go up 14 cents a liter overnight for customers filling up Thursday, said Dan McTeague, president of Canadians for Affordable Energy.

“So it's going from $1.65.9 (a litre) to $1.79.90,” said McTeague, who said the increase would affect the entire province except northwestern Ontario, which gets its price from the prairie market.

“This is the highest level since August 2022 two years ago,” he added.

McTeague said the price increase was due to stations switching to summer blended gasoline.

“At this time of year, prices go up to reflect the new blend of gasoline, which is more expensive to make,” he explained. “Butane is used for gasoline in winter, and in summer it is alkaline. “Alkyalts are very expensive.”

“In the winter, you want to start the ignition quickly at cold temperatures, you use volatile butane. You will release it in the summer. This is a big difference. It's going to be a while and it's going to go up,” McTeague said.

McTeague also attributed the increase in gas prices in Canada to the increase in the carbon tax, rising oil prices and the weakness of the Canadian dollar.

“It just makes a bad situation worse,” he said. “Another brick in the wall, another load on the camel's back. The cost of denying our resources, closing pipelines is one of the biggest reasons why the Canadian dollar is so weak.”
