St. Vital

Christian music is gaining more listeners and many are tuning into CHVN 95.1 FM to hear their favorite tunes.

The station at 1-741 St. Mary's Road has been operating at the site since 2007. Program director Mike Thome said the station broadcasts with 100,000 watts of power, covering an area west of the Manitoba-Ontario border from Portage la Prairie to south. Canada-US border and north to Interlake.

“We have a large and loyal audience in the Christian community,” he said. “We play non-stop Christian music and inspirational programming.”

Tom is one of nine CHVN employees working on the St. Vital site.

Part of the Golden West network, CHVN shares news with other company radio stations, including one in Grande Prairie, Alta. said Tom. While bad news cannot be ignored, CHVN staff strives to convey positive messages and find the positive side of current events.

“We're trying to highlight the positive things that are happening in Winnipeg.”

Tom started working part-time at the station 13 years ago, transitioning to a full-time role as morning show host in 2017. He says the overall content of the station hasn't changed over the years, but it's still fun to show. Music from rising local Christian groups like The Color and award-winning artist such as Niverville-raised Jordan St. Cyr.

“There was an explosion of local music.”

According to Tom, CHVN listeners are not only those who are actively practicing Christianity, but also those who enjoy the positive and encouraging messages found in the program.

The CHVN website offers access to live streaming and its content is updated daily. This site has a Bible verse of the day and news and weather content. Tom said that his users are gradually increasing.

According to Tom, CHVN can provide listeners with not only news and music, but also encouragement to anyone who needs support.

“I love hearing from our audience and how much we mean to them.”
