Toronto police say three people, including a 17-year-old, have been charged in connection with two car thefts in the city last week.

According to a police news release issued Tuesday, officers made an arrest Friday evening after locating two stolen vehicles in the area of Islington Avenue and Steeles Avenue West.

Officers determined the vehicles — a blue BMW X5 and a white Lamborghini Urus — were stolen using an automatic license plate reader, said Supt. Andy Singh at a press conference on Tuesday.

A 21-year-old from Mississauga, a 19-year-old from Oakville and a 17-year-old from Oshawa were arrested Friday, according to the release. A total of 54 charges are brought against them.

As the three accused entered the BMW, the police tried to arrest them, Singh said. The driver then “recklessly swerved down a hill” and hit a police car to avoid arrest, he said.

Singh said the driver “showed nothing but complete disregard for life” as he tried to flee.

More than $18,000 in cash and three loaded handguns were also seized, police said. The group did not pull a gun on the officers, but weapons were “readily available,” Singh said.

Police say the BMW was originally stolen on April 6 in the area of Ellesmere and Kennedy Road. The victim was in the parking lot when three male suspects demanded his car keys.

Police say one suspect pointed a firearm at the victim, who was not injured.

Police say the Lamborghini was stolen on April 11 from a gas station in the area of Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue. In this case, four male suspects repeatedly assaulted the victim before taking his keys.

During the press conference, Singh said that the victim was run over by his car while the suspects were fleeing. The victim was taken to the hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries.

Toronto Police Inspector Joseph Mathis called the carjackings “extremely egregious” because the suspects had been in Toronto for a week with the two stolen vehicles.
