The Vancouver Canucks beat the Calgary Flames 4-1 to win the Pacific Division title.

The Vancouver Canucks took first place in the Pacific Division with a 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday.

The first goal of the game was perhaps the most unexpected as defenseman Tyler Myers opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal midway through the first period. It would then take 1:28 more time for Nils Hoaglander to take the lead and make it 2-0 with an own goal. If the Canucks weren't satisfied with that lead, Dakota Joshua scored two minutes into the second period to give them a 3-0 lead. That lead wasn't completely safe as Brayden Pachal pulled one back midway through the third frame, but JT Miller put the Canucks back up by three with a goal of his own with less than five minutes remaining to secure a 4-1 win. Perhaps more importantly, goaltender Thatcher Demko stopped 39 of 40 shots in her first game since March 9 for the win.

Going into Tuesday's game, the only game that would affect the Canucks' status as Pacific Division champions was their game against the Flames, as they needed just one point to secure the seed. Otherwise, if the Oilers don't lose either of their remaining two games, they have a game against the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday.

However, a win would ensure Vancouver is still in contention to win the Western Conference, as any loss on Tuesday would hand the title to the Dallas Stars. The Stars can secure it themselves against the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday, and if they don't, a Canucks win over the Jets on Thursday would give them home-ice advantage in the Western Conference.

It is the 11th time in franchise history that the Canucks have won their division and the first time since they won five consecutive division titles from 2009 to 2013. However, this is the first time the Canucks have won their division in the current standings. format, since the division win in 2013 was the last season of six divisions, with a format of five teams per division before moving to four divisions for the 2013–14 season.

Who the Canucks will play in the first round has yet to be determined. If the Stars win the Western Conference, the Canucks will play the Nashville Predators in the first round, but if the Canucks win the conference, they will play the Los Angeles Kings or Vegas Golden Knights, whichever team secures the third seed. in the Pacific Division and whichever ends up in the second wild card spot, as the Preds get the first wild card spot regardless of where the Kings and Golden Knights finish.
