Ontario gas prices to hit highest level since 2022: expert

Ontario is set to see a big jump at the pumps later this week as gas prices in the province hit a two-year high, according to one industry expert.

Dan McTeague, president of Canadians for Affordable Energy, told CP24 on Wednesday that both Ontario and Quebec will see a 14-cent-per-litre increase Thursday night.

That would push prices to $1.79 a liter in Ontario cities, the highest level seen since Aug. 2, 2022, McTeague added. In Quebec, prices are expected to rise to $1.88 a liter, he said.

This week's increase, he said, was due to higher summer blended gasoline prices. The cheap winter mix won't be back until fall.

Last month, McTeague warned that gas prices will rise this spring and summer with a shift to summer blended gas, as well as rising carbon taxes and rising oil prices.
