Four people were shot on scooters in the Bronx, one fatally

NEW YORK (AP) — Gunmen on scooters shot four people, one fatally, at a Bronx street corner Tuesday night, police said.

Assistant Police Chief Benjamin Gourley said about 10 shots were fired after two scooters pulled up to an intersection shortly after 6 p.m., and the passengers in the back of each pulled out a gun.

Three victims, aged between 23 and 37, who were standing at the street corner, were shot in the legs. A fourth man, a 29-year-old man, was shot in the leg and chest and later died, Gurley said.

“The perpetrators wore masks and hoods to conceal their identities and then fled northbound on scooters,” Gurley said.

One man was taken into custody for questioning on Tuesday night. But Gurley said police did not know if the man was involved in the shooting.

Police are investigating whether the victims were targeted by the shooters or whether there were any gang ties to the shooting, he said.

The condition of the three surviving victims was not immediately available.

The police department's community response team has been working in the Bronx since April 1, aggressively targeting criminals on scooters, Deputy Police Commissioner Kaz Dadri said.

The department has taken 9,500 scooters, dirt bikes and ATVs off the streets since Jan. 1, including 2,500 in the Bronx, Daughtry said.

“This is a prime example of why we're doing this,” he said.
