Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens

MONTREAL — One game remains for the Detroit Red Wings as they hope to clinch another Stanley Cup playoff berth against the Montreal Canadiens.

The only reason the Red Wings are in this position is Lucas Raymond's late game heroics. In the final home game of the season on Monday night, Raymond scored the game-tying goal in regulation and the game-winner in overtime.

While the Wings need just a point to survive the 82nd game, a win would give them a good chance to advance to the postseason for the first time in eight years.

So what does Wings have to do to get in?

Detroit is tied with the Washington Capitals with 89 points, but because of the Capitals' more wins in regulation, they are in the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Capers play the Philadelphia Flyers, who still have a chance to make the playoffs, on Tuesday night.

The Red Wings can win either way, but if they do, the Capitals will need the Flyers to beat them either way.

Detroit could miss the postseason if it loses in overtime or a shootout. The Flyers needed to beat the Capitals in regulation, and the Pittsburgh Penguins needed to lose to the New York Islanders either way on Wednesday night.

Regardless of how this season ends, the Wings will win 40 games for the first time since they last made the playoffs in 2016.

After Monday night's result, the Wings and Habs are 2-1 this season.
