Controlled burning in natural areas

The City of Winnipeg announced in a press release Tuesday that the annual controlled burns of natural areas will begin this week, weather permitting.

Expected to continue through June 14, the burn will only occur when wind conditions are favorable and adequate fire protection equipment is in place.

Because fire plays an important role in maintaining and restoring prairies, the absence of fire allows weeds to invade endangered plant communities.

Since 1986, controlled fire extinguishing works have been carried out in tall grass fields.
