Canada Post issues stamps featuring two endangered frogs News

Canada Post has released new stamps featuring two species of endangered Canadian frogs.

The stamps depict the Oregon spotted frog and Fowler's frog, both of which are listed as endangered species in Canada.

Fowler's Frog

In Canada, mainly nocturnal Fowler's frogs (Anaxyrus fowleri) are found only on the north shore of Lake Erie, usually on its sandy beaches and dunes. According to a Canada Post news release, they live in the eastern United States.

Adults are five to eight centimeters long and thrive in shallow ponds, pools and marshes. They are gray to blue in color with small black spots on their backs and bulging, white or cream-colored bellies.

The Oregon Frog

In Canada, Oregon toads (Rana pretiosa) live only in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia. In the United States, their population in California has disappeared, but they still exist in parts of Oregon and Washington state.

According to Canada Post, the webbing on their back feet extends to the tips of their toes, making them efficient swimmers. Their frogs are angled upwards, allowing them to be completely submerged when viewed from above the water.

Adult Oregon toads are brown or reddish-brown in color with light central dark spots on the head, back, sides, and legs.

Both species have lost habitat to human activity, invasive organisms and pollution, according to the release.
