Flares on Canucks predict goaltending

Jacob Markstrom (23-22-2, 2.75 GAA, .906 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Thatcher Demko (34-13-2, 2.47 GAA, .917 SV%, 5 SO)

Markstrom has been sliding lately, allowing 3 or more goals in 3 straight losses in April. He is 0-3-0 with a 3.69 GAA and .869 SV% in 3 outings.

Markstrom also allowed 3 goals on 25 shots in a March 23 loss against his former organization in Vancouver, and is 1-2-0 with a 2.76 GAA and .882 SV% in 3 appearances against the Canucks this season.

Demko returned from a lower-body injury suffered on March 9 against the Winnipeg Jets. He missed the last 14 games, but will be back to get his feet wet and do it again before the All-Stars head to the postseason. The Canucks went 7-5-2 in his absence.

Forecast

Canuck 4, Flame 3

Money line

The Canucks (-225) cost 2x the potential return, and that's a little too much risk for not enough reward.

Yes, while Vancouver is playing for the division title and will also be watching a small scoreboard – the juice could be in jeopardy, especially when Demko returns from LBI. Whether his A/C stinks or has a little rust remains to be seen.

PASSING and look at the puck line instead.

Puck Line/Spread vs

The FLAMES +1.5 (-140) If you want a little insurance, they are not overpriced.

The Canucks are more of a threat going into this game, but it's a little worrisome to see Demko back. He's an All-Star, but this is an important game, and we'll see if he can regain his form right away or if he needs some time to control the puck at a high level. It may take a few rounds to get on track, and it may be closer than Vancouver fans and bettors think.

Over/under

Above 6 (-120) may be the best game here. We saw Markstrom go off the rails in April, and we have a goaltender coming back from a weeks-long injury layoff from Vancouver. The offense may be at its highest in this Pacific Division battle.
