A Winnipeg committee has approved a pilot project to clean up trash in homeless camps

The Mayor's Executive Policy Committee has approved a $170,000 pilot project to clean up trash at the camps.

The proposal says the city will enter into a single initial agreement with the Main Street Project, Siloam Mission and the Downtown Public Safety Partnership.

The teams will conduct the test program until the end of October.

The move comes after a city report said weekly cleanups cost up to $4 million a year.

In 2023, the city conducted 162 cleanups at a cost of approximately $84,000.

The Civil Service EPC will report the findings to the committee at its November meeting.
