Lane Hutson of the Montreal Canadiens will make his NHL debut tonight against the Detroit Red Wings.

Montreal Canadiens prospect Lane Hutson is expected to make his National Hockey League debut tonight against the Detroit Red Wings.

Hutson practiced on the second defensive pairing this morning with veteran linebacker David Savard.

The Canadiens recently agreed to terms with Hutson on a three-year, entry-level contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $950,000.

The 20-year-old had 15 goals, 34 points and 49 assists in 38 games during the 2023-24 campaign with the Boston University Terriers of the NCAA. Hutson is tied with University of Denver quarterback Zeev Buium for first among NCAA quarterbacks. Hutson was a Hobey Baker nominee and named to the NCAA Hockey East First All-Star Team.

Last season's 48 points was one of the best seasons by a Boston University U-19 defenseman in NCAA history, breaking the 35-year-old scoring record set by Brian Leach. Hutson won the NCAA Hockey East Player of the Year Award, the NCAA Hockey East Tournament MVP, the NCAA New England MVP Award and was a Hobey Baker finalist.

Internationally, Hutson represented the USA team three times at the Under-18 Men's Championship, once and twice at the World Junior Championship. During the 2024 World Juniors, Hutson led the Americans to a gold medal and recorded six assists, the most among defenders at the tournament.

The Canadiens currently have a record of 30-36-14 and a .462 hitting percentage among 2024 draft lottery odds and an 8.5% chance of winning the draft lottery for Maclin Celebrini is fifth. After tonight's game against the Red Wings, Montreal will play Detroit in back-to-back games on Tuesday.
