From opera singer to intensive care volunteer at the Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital (Neuro)

Michael Eusebio is a professional opera singer from Toronto. He has lived in the Montreal area for the past three years. Since last fall, he has been volunteering once a week in Neuro's intensive care unit.

“I love opera and enjoy my career and all the opportunities it brings me. However, as I develop, I realize that there are other areas that interest me. I chose to volunteer at the McGill University Health Center because I am currently working in the field of Health and Social Services. considering a career,” he explains.

An important role in the quality of patient care

During volunteering sessions at Neuro, Mishael doesn't notice how time flies. “I help patients with meals, and if I have the opportunity, I interact with them and their family members or friends. I think I'm giving them a sense of comfort and warmth during one of the most difficult times in their lives, and it's rewarding to feel like I'm making a small difference.”

Stories that last a lifetime

Mishael meets many people during her volunteer shift, but she always remembers one patient in particular. He suffered from aphasia, a neurological communication disorder characterized by the loss of the ability to communicate and understand language. “Due to his diagnosis, he had to resign from his teaching position at CEGEEP. Despite this difficult decision, he told me that he realized that love conquers everything, even career growth. I introduced this patient. My volunteer colleagues, because I want them to witness his great wisdom” , – says Mishael.

Tips for future volunteers

Sometimes it's hard to find time to volunteer in our busy schedules, but Mishael believes it's worth the effort. “I realized that despite our different life trajectories and our current reality, my passion is helping people. If I had one piece of advice for someone who wants to start volunteering, it would be to be gentle and patient with yourself. It's possible. It's hard at first, but persevere because it's the most fun of your life. will be one of the experiences,” he says.
