Competitions on recycling roofing materials are being held at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal

Professionals from around the world are invited to find new and creative ways to recycle the roof at Montreal's Olympic Stadium.

Designers and architects can present their ideas that will “give new life” to the materials that currently make up the roof.

According to the press release, the roof is made of different materials.

“It consists of a variety of materials, including the iconic cables that support it, its two inner and outer membranes, and the equipment that supports the structure,” Olympic Park (SDMVPO) officials wrote.

It is a global competition to “put together the most optimal proposals for the environment, economy and society”.

After they receive all the applications, Quebecers vote for their favorite of the eight ideas pre-selected by a jury of experts.

“This initiative is part of a broader approach to sustainable development and a circular economy that includes artistic travel designs made from roofing materials,” SDMVPO officials said. “All of these actions will give the roof of the Olympic Stadium a second life for the benefit of the people of Quebec.”

The two current membranes of the roof (external and internal) are 42,000 m2, which is the size of 26 hockey rinks.

The total length of the cables is about 12 km, which is almost the entire length of Boulevard Saint-Laurent, and the roof structure consists of 434 steel connectors that attach the cables.

Demolition of the roof of the Olympic stadium will begin in the summer of 2024.

Applicants must register by May 31, 2024, and candidates must submit their ideas by June 11, 2024.

Contest winners will be awarded prizes ranging from $5,000 to $15,000.
