Calgary weather forecast for Monday, April 15, 2024

The warm, summery weather Albertans enjoyed over the weekend will be replaced by wintry weather conditions later Monday and into early Tuesday.

Environment Canada and Climate Change (ECCC) issued a widespread special weather statement for central and southern Alberta on Monday, as well as snow warnings in the foothills.

In a statement for Calgary, the ECCC noted that a frontal system will move through the city Monday afternoon and “bring a cooler air mass with rain and snow.”

Mixed precipitation is expected during the rain-to-snow transition, although these types of scenarios are difficult to pinpoint in terms of location, accumulation, and duration. Atmospheric temperatures will be near freezing near the surface at night, so some areas may experience freezing rain, but during the latter part of the season, surface temperature increases may be sufficient to cause icing. minimal, if at all.

Snow totals will also vary in the system ahead, with the highest accumulations forecast for areas west of Highway QEII and Highway 2, but this should be evaluated as an evolving scenario as conditions are subject to change.

Snowfall totals around Calgary are expected to be between 5 and 10 centimeters, with the first snow melting on the roads.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued special weather statements (pink) and snow warnings (white) for central and southern Alberta on Monday, April 15, 2024.Strong northerly winds could contribute to slick conditions in some areas, including sidewalks, early Tuesday, and precipitation, depending on the timing of the transition to snow, could affect traffic Tuesday morning.

As of 9 a.m. Monday, road conditions in Alberta were still rated as good for driving, according to 511 Alberta.

Daytime highs are expected to be well below seasonal averages and near freezing by the end of the week, but warming will begin on Saturday.
