Calgary councilor denies allegations of conflict of interest

A Calgary city councilor is speaking out following allegations of a conflict of interest after he attended a quilt swap event over the weekend.

But Ward 9 resident George Clark, who attended the event, said the councilman's actions were a conflict of interest. He says he is formally submitting his complaints to a public hearing process.

“It will be part of the public record,” Clark says. “I have also lodged a complaint with the Integrity Commissioner.”

Carra was the only consultant invited to the event, said Alex Chevalier of Future of Calgary, a third-party consultant that organized the event. He denies the allegations.

“Everyone was so welcoming, it wasn't a secret,” says Chevalier.

Clark says he wants Carra to recuse himself during the upcoming public hearing. On April 22, the Council will hold a public hearing on the rezoning.

Public hearings will see council listen to Calgarians' concerns, followed by a vote to change the default base zoning to infill (R-CG) to a contiguous land-oriented zoning. A townhouse building consists of more than three units and is side by side and may contain additional suites.

The city is considering increasing density in many neighborhoods that currently only allow single-family housing.
