Berry-UQAM metro operation will result in road closures

Work continues on the Berry-UQAM metro – causing major road closures in downtown Montreal and headaches for many drivers.

Since 2022, many roads have been closed, and although it is planned to be completely finished by the end of 2023, de Maisonneuve boulevard. The output is now expected to be completed by July 2024.

The job was to replace the waterproof membrane protecting the roof of the Berri-UQAM metro station.

In particular, STM spokesman Kevin Bilodeau told CityNews via email that “some surprises were discovered during construction, such as contaminated soil and the presence of a large 20-meter concrete block in a difficult-to-reach area that will be demolished (which was not planned). Such discoveries are not uncommon in this type of site, as plans often date back to the 60s.”

Next steps:

  • April – May 2024: Reopening of the northbound pavement of Boulevard de Maisonneuve between rue Saint-Denis and rue Savoie, then between rue Savoie and rue Berry.
  • End of May 2024: Partial reopening of Boulevard de Maisonneuve. to traffic.
  • June 2024: Partial reopening of northbound sidewalk between Sanguinet and Berry streets.
  • July 2024: Full reopening between Sanguinet and Berry streets.

This will delay the start of Phase 2, which is currently in the planning stages, until 2025, explained Montreal's public transit agency.
