Bassitt pitches as the Blue Jays beat the Yankees 3-1

Chris Bassitt got off to a quality start and the Toronto Blue Jays relievers did the rest as the club beat the New York Yankees 3-1 on Monday night.

Bassitt (2-2) pitched 6 1/3 innings, scattering four hits, allowing just one run and striking out five. He walked twice on 97 pitches.

The fearsome duo of veteran starters Juan Soto and Aaron Judge was outstanding against New York's middle. They combined to go 0-for-6 on the night with a walk and two strikeouts.

“He just took big pitch after big pitch,” manager John Schneider said. “What does he do”.

Relievers Tim Maiza, Chad Green and Yimi Garcia pitched clean innings en route to Garcia's second save of the new campaign.

Blue Jays hitters piled on eight walks as Yankees shortstop Luis Gil took control. The 25-year-old had seven tackles, including a free pass to Isiah Kiner-Falefa that got Toronto on the board early. Gill hit six.

The Jays team is still looking for answers

Catcher Alejandro Kirk was the lone player to finish with a multi-hit night, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a walk. Infielder Cavan Biggio doubled off Gil in the third inning and Bo Bichette added a single. That was the case for Toronto's forwards, who have yet to find their footing after a pedestrian 2022-23 season.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Kevin Kiermaier and Daulton Warshaw are among those hitting under .200 on the year. Kiermaier went 6-for-42 with 17 strikeouts through Monday, while Warshaw went 9-for-48 with 13 strikeouts.

Guerrero went 3-for-23 last week (4), walking more than he hit (3). Toronto hitters are 26th in the majors in home runs (14) and 23rd in hits (126). The bright spot is the walk, as the Jays' hitters enter Tuesday's game now tied for fifth in the league.

On Monday, the club activated catcher Danny Jansen from the injured list to help stabilize Toronto's lineup. Last year, the 29-year-old football player, who played a career-high 17 times, missed the start of the new season with a broken finger in the spring. Jansen is expected to make his 2024 debut on Tuesday.

Toronto will try to hit four runs by handing the ball to left-hander Yusei Kikuchi, who will face southpaw Carlos Rodon. First pitch is set for 7:07 p.m. ET, live on Sportsnet.
