A man shot and killed by police last week after allegedly stabbing an officer in Toronto's west side is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday near the Tim Hortons near College Street and Lansdowne Avenue, when police were called to a man in crisis.

When they arrived, officers attempted to detain the man under the Mental Health Act, but a struggle ensued and the officer was stabbed. The man was then shot with both a firearm and a conductive energy weapon, or Taser.

The SIU, Ontario's police watchdog, invoked its mandate to conduct an investigation, as it does when someone is seriously injured or killed when police officers are involved.

A Toronto police spokeswoman confirmed Monday that the 27-year-old man is facing a total of 10 charges. These include:

  • Two attempted murders.

  • Two counts of Assault on a Peace Officer with a Weapon.

  • One count of aggravated assault on a peace officer.

  • One count of dangerous weapons.

  • Four counts of failure to comply with a release order.

Both the injured officer and the accused suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were in fair condition at the hospital Friday.

The stabbing is the third time Toronto police have been injured in the line of duty in the past week.
