The Senators beat the Canadiens in a shootout for their 9th straight win

Tkachuk tied the score at 3-3 on the power play with his 37th goal 47 seconds into the third period, dropping a low pass and finishing with a backhand into the glove side.

Newhook gave Montreal a 4-3 lead at 15:49 when a center pass slipped off the skate of Ottawa defenseman Jakob Chychrun.

“Another tight one,” Newhook said of the result. “I think we're finding ways to stay in games, stay in there at the end, but execute a little bit, give them 5-on-6 goals. It will be. I think some of these small details come into play when you're not on the right side of these close games. I think we can sort this place out for next year.”

It could be Martin's last home game as Ottawa coach as the Senators look for a permanent replacement in the offseason. The 71-year-old, who replaced DJ Smith on Dec. 18, coached and coached the Senators from 1996-2004, holding the franchise records for games (746) and wins (366).

“It was great,” Martin said. “I enjoyed the opportunity to come back and hopefully help the team learn what it takes to be in the playoffs, how to play nightly, help the players grow and maybe get better. As an organization, I think we have some work to do, but I think we're headed in the right direction.”
