Queen Rock Montreal captures the world's most iconic rock band at the peak of their live powers. Recorded in 1981 and recently released as a record-breaking digitally restored IMAX concert film, this landmark moment in the band's history is now available as dual Blu-Ray and dual 4K Ultra High Definition packages, as well as double CD and triple vinyl packages. Both will arrive on May 10, the team announced.

Queen Rock Montreal presents Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon at their most exciting and impressive. As Brian May puts it, this queen is “alive and dangerous.”

When Queen returned to Montreal, Canada for the fourth time in November 1981 to perform two huge concerts at the 18,000-seat Forum, they were in all-conquering form.

This pair of concerts in Montreal marked a historic moment for Queen. After their huge success in the 1970s, the group took an even bigger step into the 80s, with the hugely successful album The Game spawning the two biggest US singles, “Another One Bites The Dust” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” (both Billboard). No.1), followed by the UK No.1 single “Under Pressure”.

Queen's return to Montreal comes after nearly two years of touring, including their first tour of South and Central America, where the band played two nights to more than 150,000 fans at São Paulo's Morumbi Stadium. As a result, when the band arrived in Canada in November 1981, they were electrified.

“Montreal is one of our favorite cities, it's a great audience, very energetic,” says Brian May. “We've played The Forum a few times before and it's always packed with really enthusiastic people who give us a lot of energy.”

The original concerts on November 24 and 25, 1981 were truly groundbreaking. They were specially arranged to shoot a full-length concert film to document their live show. Director Saul Swimmer planned to film them using state-of-the-art Double Anamorphic 35mm footage, which would allow them to be shown on a five-story high screen. Backstage tensions between the members of Queen and Swimmer could have caused problems, but instead they took the band to new heights.

“We're very nervous, some of the tempos are very fast, there's some very sharp, furious play,” May says.

Queen Rock Montreal presents an even more sophisticated version of the band that released Bohemian Rhapsody half a decade ago, showcasing their unparalleled musicianship, vocal power and unstoppable live energy. “There's no one else on stage but us,” says May.

Taylor says, “It's interesting to realize now how free we were on stage in 1981. It consists of four plays, Just the Four of Us at the Queen and Seeing Freddy. It's like being on stage with the band, as the cameras are very high quality for the time. I've never seen anything that gets you so excited about a performance.''

Freddie Mercury's Hello Montreal… long time no see. Do you want to be crazy?' The energy rarely runs out of steam before the one-two punch of “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions” – even for the ballad “Love of My Life.”

Not to mention Mercury's powerful vocal acrobatics, May's amazing six-string pyrotechnics, Deacon's rock hard beats, Taylor's relentless rhythmic display, and the unique combination of all four voices – Queen Rock Montreal showcases the collective harmony and individual strengths of the four musicians. As Brian May said, they were “at the top of our game”.

The audio comes on 2CD/3LP black vinyl and a special 3LP colored clear blue vinyl (a Queen online store exclusive). Also available in Double Blu-ray or Double 4K Ultra High Definition package.

Like never before, the package presents this historic performance for the first time in 4K with Dolby Atmos sound to experience rock 'n' roll royalty as they take to this historic stage with Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. A live concert from 1981.

The original 35mm negative was scanned to ensure the highest resolution possible, then inspected frame by frame to remove any dirt, damage or seams to enhance image clarity and quality.

“I can't think of any other recording of our shows where you have such a close relationship with Freddie,” says May. “You can see almost everything going on in his head, you can see his anger, you can see his insecurities, you can see how he can move people to the back of the audience. It's very emotional for me. God, he was good.'

For the first time, the concert will be shown in full and widescreen format. The fullscreen aspect ratio is more in keeping with the way the film was originally shot, while the widescreen is an alternate presentation carefully cropped to fill the 16:9 ratio. In addition, the 4K Ultra High Definition edition includes SDR / HDR dynamic range options.

In addition to Montreal, this package contains 21 minutes of the most famous in the history of rock and roll – the electric performance of Queen's Live Aid, upscaled to high definition for the first time and with new stereo, 5.1 and Dolby Atmos sound mixes. With Freddie Mercury and Brian May, Is This The World We Made…? that evening.

Now, these double CD/triple vinyl LP and Double Blu-ray or double 4K Ultra High Definition packages bring a whole new dimension to this amazing piece of Queen history.

“You see four young guys, we've toured the world a lot, we've sold a lot of records, we've had a lot of hits, we know how to play with each other,” Brian says. May Rock is the Queen of Montreal. “I'm proud of who we were back then.”

Taylor echoes this sentiment: “After all these years, it's so satisfying to watch our young selves in explosive action!”

Queen Rock Montreal's staying power was confirmed in early 2024 when the digitally remastered version of the film, released exclusively in IMAX cinemas, became the world's most successful IMAX concert film, grossing a record £5.5m worldwide and surpassing Talking Heads' Stop. Making Sense and The Beatles documentary Get Back.

Queen Rock Montreal will be released worldwide on May 10th. Pre-order here and watch a remastered performance of “Let Me Entertain You” below.
