Davis Schneider's parents reflect on his historic moments with the Toronto Blue Jays

They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and so it seems Toronto Blue Jays player Davis Schneider.

His parents, Elena and Steve Schneider, were in Toronto to witness their son's first MLB home opener as a player.

“I think it was very surreal, but we just sat in his happiness, so it was a wonderful and happy experience for us,” Elena told CityNews.

More than 40,000 fans at Rogers Center cheered when Schneiders' name was introduced during the team's home opener.

“It was pretty amazing,” Steve said.

“All the fans have been great to us, come up to us after the games and the best part is hearing how nice he is to the fans and he's signing autographs and doing everything his mum taught him.”

The couple made the nearly nine-hour drive from their home in Berlin, ND, to witness another career moment for their son on the court.

Walking around the ballroom, you'd think the couple were celebrities, with fans clamoring to take pictures with them or talk to them about Davis. When you see how they interact with fans, it's easy to see why Davis has earned the reputation of “Mr. Davis.” Nice Guy” in the ballpark. Whether at spring training, before or after a game, he always stops to chat with fans and sign autographs.

“That's the most important thing to us,” Elena said, fighting back tears as she talked about Davis' reputation.

“He's the baby in our family and he's learned a lot from his siblings. That's the most important thing to us…how the fans treat him and how he treats them. To see how much love Canada has shown him, it's been more than we ever expected or prayed for.”

“There is a whole country for it. It's really amazing,” Steve added.

Drafted by the Blue Jays in the 28th round in 2017 and spent several years in minor league programs, it's been a long journey to the big leagues for the youngest of four brothers. But on the evening of August 4, 2023, his dream came true and brought joy to his family.

In his first at-bat in the majors, he hit a home run against the Green Monster at Fenway Park.

“It was an out-of-body experience and it was harder for us to fully absorb the weekend,” Elena said.

“I think it affected us as the season ended. I still watched videos and YouTube videos of parties at his house. I would love to relive it because it was such a special time with friends and family and so many people who came to see her debut. It was more than we could have asked for.

“Everything he does, he always exceeds expectations.”

It's not every day that parents see their children achieve their dreams.

“It still doesn't seem real,” Steve said.

“We knew he was going to do great things from the time he was in diapers,” Elena added.

“He'd take a bat or a ball or a pen or a screwdriver and crumpled paper and a ping-pong ball and a Superball and a mini-puddle, whatever he could throw at it and hit it. what was it, he would do it. He always had good hand-eye coordination.

“He was always playing baseball, sleeping with his glove on, sleeping with his bat, that's what he did.”

When the streak ended in Boston in 2023, Davis made history and became the first player in MLB history to record nine hits and two homers in his first three games.
