A Calgary teenager has pleaded guilty to attacking people and cars with a machete in the Calgary Zoo parking lot on Boxing Day.

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the 17-year-old cannot be named.

The boy appeared in youth court via closed-circuit television on Thursday and pleaded guilty to five charges, including assault with a weapon, criminal damage to property and breaching a release order.

Neither case was tried in court, but when the teenager was arrested, the Calgary Police Service said he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of the incident.

On Dec. 26 around 6:30 p.m., police responded to multiple 911 calls about a man swinging a machete at people and cars in the north parking lot of the Calgary Zoo.

During the attack, one person was slightly injured and several vehicles were damaged.

Defense attorney James Wyman asked the judge to postpone sentencing so that a pre-sentence report could be completed.

A Gladue report examining the personal and family history of a local criminal was also commissioned.

A sentencing hearing will be held in June before Judge Jennifer Shaften.
