A police officer, a sheriff's deputy and a suspect were killed in a shooting in upstate New York, police said.

LIVERPOOL, N.Y. (AP) — A police officer and a sheriff's deputy were shot and killed by a suspect in upstate New York Sunday night, police said.

The shooting happened just after 8 p.m. in Liverpool, about 6 miles (9.6 kilometers) north of Syracuse.

Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile said at a press conference that the Syracuse Police Department and the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office were tracking the vehicle, which had previously eluded police.

Two Syracuse police officers unsuccessfully attempted to stop the suspect vehicle, but obtained the license plate and tracked it to an address on Darien Drive in Liverpool. After Cecil learned the suspect might be armed, they called the sheriff's office for help.

Officers located the vehicle at the home and saw what appeared to be a gun inside. They then “heard someone use a firearm from inside the residence,” Cecil said.

At least one suspect exchanged gunfire with officers. A Syracuse officer, a sheriff's deputy and the suspect were shot and taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

All three died at the hospital, Cecil said.

“We lost two heroes tonight,” Cecil said.

Onondaga County Sheriff Toby Shelley said police plan to search the home as part of the ongoing investigation.

“This is a dark day for Syracuse,” Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh said. “It's our worst nightmare come true.”
