It wasn't the first time Madrid players had complained about being racially abused during a match in Mallorca. Vinicius Junior said he was called a monkey during a league match there last year and the fan was charged with a hate crime. During the investigation, Vinicius and the fan appeared before the judge. Mallorca banned the fan for three years.

Partially owned by NBA greats Steve Nash and Steve Kerr, Mallorca recently made headlines after reaching the Copa del Rey final. He lost the decider to Athletic Bilbao earlier this month.

Since Vinicius arrived in Spain six years ago, there have been several incidents of racial abuse against him. The incident in a league match last season prompted an outpouring of support for the Brazilian and a series of moves by local officials to step up the fight against racism.

Spain recently faced yet another spate of abuses against Brazil at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium before it hosted a One Skin friendly against Brazil to celebrate the fight against racism.

No one has been prosecuted in Spain over racial abuse in professional football.

Madrid won Saturday's game 1-0 thanks to a second-half goal from Chuameni. They lead the league by eight points over reigning champions Barcelona.

Black Canadian forward Cyle Larin was among Mallorca's substitutes for the game. The 28-year-old from Brampton, Ont., is Canada's leading men's scorer with 29 international goals.

“Mallorca” is in 15th place.
