Warshaw hit his second career slam, Rodriguez fans hit 6 in his debut as the Blue Jays beat the Rockies 5-3.

Daulton Warshaw hit his second career grand slam, Yariel Rodriguez went 3 2/3 over 6 innings in his major league debut, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3 on Saturday.

Rodriguez allowed one run, four hits and two walks. The right-hander signed a five-year deal with Toronto in the offseason after playing in Japan until 2022.

“We really couldn't ask for more,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. “It was so electric.”

Rodriguez was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo before the game. He started in place of right-hander Bowden Francis (1-2), who allowed two runs and three hits in 2 1/3 innings in relief of his new teammate.

Tim Maiza and Chad Green each pitched one inning and Yimi Garcia struck out the side for his first save in the ninth.

“He's got some really, really bad things going on right now,” Schneider said of Garcia. “It was a good way to close the door.”

Colorado beat Toronto 12-4 on Friday night, but the Rockies haven't won back-to-back road games since July 2023 in Miami.

Colorado's last winning streak was a five-game streak last September 12-16 that ended with a doubleheader against San Francisco.

After three of the first four batters reached safely against Rockies right-hander Dakota Hudson (0-3), Toronto's Davis Schneider led off with a base walk.

Warshaw followed with his homer into the right field bullpen, his second home run of the season.

“They fished heaters and I gave them in some bad spots,” Hudson said.

Hudson allowed five runs and five hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out five.

“There's no question he wants to get that first inning back,” Black said.

Brenton Doyle hit a solo home run for Colorado in his third and Brendan Rodgers had a two-run single in the sixth.

Rockies shortstop Kris Bryant left after an at-bat in the top of the fourth inning with right rib and back stiffness. Bryant suffered the injury in the first when he hit the outfield wall while passing a deep drive by Wladimir Guerrero Jr.

“Don't think it's bad, but we'll see how it goes tonight,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “Hopefully he'll be back there tomorrow.”

Bryant doubled in the second, but was still sore from the hit in the fourth. Michael Toglia took over on defense in the bottom half.

Rockies catcher Elias Diaz seemed to lose the number of outs and scored from second base on Elehuris Montero's base hit down the left field line in the fourth.

“It's very unfortunate,” Black said of the mental lapse. “You don't see that in the major leagues very often.”

Guerrero hit a two-out single in the seventh, but was thrown out trying to advance to third on Bo Bichette's single to right.

The Blue Jays traded right-hander Paolo Espino to Buffalo to open the roster for Rodriguez.
