MTL@OTT: Game Summary | Montreal Canadiens

CANADA – A back-and-forth ended in favor of the Ottawa Senators, who defeated the Canadiens 5-4 in a shootout at the Canada Tire Center on Saturday.

Mike Matheson opened the scoring in the first period and became the ninth defenseman in franchise history to score two shorthanded goals in the same season.

Cole Caufield took over the middle frame and scored twice to give Montreal a 3-2 lead at halftime. The 23-year-old set a new career high for goals in a single season at the age of 27th On the power play at 13:05 of the second period.

Alex Newhook gave Montreal the lead with less than five minutes left in Saturday's game, but Ottawa held on late to force overtime. Overtime didn't decide anything, so Drake Batterson needed a buzzer-beater to score the game-winner for the Senators.

Cayden Prime did his best in the Canadian crease, stopping 40 of 44 shots in front of him.
