Matt Murray's journey from surgery to Toronto Marlies goaltender – Hockey Writers – Toronto Maple Leafs

For Toronto Maple Leafs fans, Matt Murray's name has long seemed like a ghost. The ghost made the news today when it was announced that he had been transferred to the American Hockey League (AHL). After bilateral hip surgery and an extended recovery, he is now ready to return to action with the Toronto Marlies on loan on long-term injured reserve (LTIR). The move represents a major step forward for the goalkeeper, who has worked diligently on his form.

Murray may see some AHL action soon

As part of this contractual loan, Murray can stay at the Marlies for up to three games and six days. The move will allow him to gradually ease into competitive play and assess his readiness to return to the NHL level.

Murray is expected to see his first game action of the season in the Marlies' upcoming games. One is tonight against the Syracuse Crunch and the other is Wednesday against the Rochester Americans. If he plays, those games will mark his first competitive game of the season. This opportunity represents an important step in Murray's rebuilding process and gives the Maple Leafs additional depth and scoring opportunities as they approach the postseason.

It should be noted that Murray will become an unrestricted free agent in the upcoming offseason. That makes his return to game action with the Marlies an important opportunity to show if his once-elite skills are still there. Could he have a future in the NHL? It's hard to say right now.

Head coach Sheldon Keefe praises Murray's commitment to rehab

Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe praised Murray's determination and perseverance during his rehab. Despite many challenges and often training alone, Murray's positive attitude helped him recover. Keefe emphasized the importance of Murray's return, especially given the unpredictability that can surround goal-oriented situations. As crazy as it sounds, Murray has multiple Stanley Cup wins on his resume (“Leaves trade Matt Murray to Marlies on conditional loan,” Lance Hornby, Toronto Sun4/13/24).
