A Toronto nightclub known for its cheap drinks has closed

A Toronto nightclub known for its cheap drinks and good times has closed for good, but there's already something new.

Bar 244 was a hub for low-key parties in Adelaide's entertainment district, hovering despite the pandemic shutdown before officially announcing its closure on April 9 via an Instagram post.

“You may have noticed our doors are closed,” the note reads, confirming owner Jasmine Daya has sold the building and the bar has officially closed for good.

“On behalf of Jasmine and the Bar 244 team, we would like to thank all the guests who have walked through our doors over the years to make the bar a success,” the note read, adding a reminder to regulars to work hard and play harder.

The bar announced that they would be temporarily closing on December 1, 2023, but never opened their doors before confirming the closure.

It's not all bad news for those looking for a new party spot, as a new bar headed by a veteran of the Toronto bar scene is gearing up to take over the space.

Founded by former Bar 404 general manager Rohit Sharma, cocktail bar Maya will open at 244 Adelaide in the first week of May, although an exact opening date has yet to be confirmed.

There are no further details on the bar's offerings or theme yet, so we'll have to wait patiently to see if Toronto's Bar 244 can live up to the legacy left behind.
