Wild West outlaws depicted in Calgary police exhibit

The Rogues Gallery reveals the colorful stories behind dozens of mug shots of Calgary's Wild West outlaws from more than a century ago.

YouthLink Calgary Police Interpretive Center is proud to announce the opening of its new digital immersive exhibit, The Rogues' Gallery.

The Rogues Gallery reveals the colorful stories behind dozens of mug shots of Calgary's Wild West outlaws from more than a century ago. Mug shots are featured in one of the jewels of YouthLink Calgary's historical collection, Calgary #1 Mug Shot Book. This mug book was the first of its kind and in 1913 launched the Calgary police into a new era of crime detection.

“This exhibit provides a compelling insight into Calgary's past, showcasing the unique characters and stories that have shaped our city's historical landscape,” said Tara Robinson, executive director of the Calgary Police Interpretive Center at YouthLink.

Visitors will explore how society and policing have evolved over the past 100 years through videos, stories, photographs and artifacts.

“Through these historical images, we're transported back to a different era when the challenges facing police officers were different than today. But there's no doubt that police leaders of that time considered these challenges just as important as we do today,” said Deputy Chief Cathy McLellan.

The Rogues' Gallery will officially open to the public on Friday, April 12, 2024 at the YouthLink Calgary Police Interpretive Centre.

The Rogues Gallery is made possible in collaboration with the Alberta Museum Association, Alberta Archives Society, Calgary Police Service – Digital Services Unit, Canadian Penitentiary Museum, GALT Museum, Royal Alberta Museum, and Lisa Easley, librarian, conservator. and artist.
