The Canadiens are anxiously waiting to see if Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews can hit 70 goals this season.

Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews is just three games away from achieving a new record previously accomplished by only eight other NHL legends.

The center is on pace to become the ninth player in NHL history to reach the 70-goal mark in a season with just two goals, and he has three games to go.

The 26-year-old scored twice in yesterday's 6-5 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

Toronto's final home game is Saturday against the Detroit Red Wings, followed by two road games against the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning to close out the season.

There have been 14 70-goal seasons in league history, four by Wayne Gretzky, three by Brett Hull and two by Mario Lemieux, according to TSN.

“I don't think there's any doubt about it, we're seeing something really special, so appreciate it every night and as a team we want to do a good job with our game, if you've got a player like that, to maximize it. Who can put the puck in the net as often as possible,” Maple Leafs captain John Tavares told reporters after Thursday's game.

In addition to the record for most goals in any season since Lemieux's 69 in 1995-96, Matthews already has the most goals, according to TSN.

Hockey fans are buzzing online with Auston Matthews fever.

“Auston Matthews is one of the biggest generational talents in the league, currently on a quest to set a record that will never be broken in Leafs history,” said user X.

I won't say anything about how the future will play out because no one ever knows, but Auston is 41% of the way to tying Matthew Gretzky's scoring record. He's 26,” said another X user.

“Best goalscorer of all time,” another user added.

The Leafs face the Red Wings on Saturday at Scotiabank Arena at 7 p.m
