In Montreal, she knocked out Giorgi Pliskova and won the championship title

MONTREAL (AP) – Camila Giorgi capped a stunning run at the National Bank Open, defeating Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 7-5 on Sunday to win her first WTA 1000 final title.

Ranked 71st, Giorgi used a strong service game to beat sixth and fourth-ranked Pliskova, winning 71% of her first-serve points and finishing with seven aces.

Georgi was in tears after breaking Pliskova's serve to end the match.

The Italian defeated No. 9 Elise Mertens in the first round, No. 7 Petra Kvitova in the round of 16 and No. 15 Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals.

On Sunday, she broke Pliskova's momentum and went up 4-3 in the first set, causing Pliskova to throw her racket down the court.

Pliskova was playing in her first tournament since losing in three sets to top-ranked Ash Barty in the Wimbledon final.
