Car theft in Toronto makes residents consider taking bold action

Some Torontonians are considering bold or perhaps radical action as the city grapples with its auto theft crisis.

A man who moved to Canada from India as an international student in 2017 and became a permanent resident says he considered leaving the country after waking up on the morning of Jan. 11 to find nothing but a broken window in his car. its East Toronto Road.

Kamran (KAM-ran) Hussain said he left because of the instability in his country, but he is now concerned about security issues in Canada.

He said he was concerned by reports of criminals breaking into homes with guns and demanding car keys.

An increase in car thefts has led to an increase in home invasions, violent robberies and gun violence across the Toronto area, police said.

Ontario Provincial Police have described the current rate of car thefts in the province as “unprecedented,” driven in part by demand for luxury vehicles in foreign markets.
