Calgary community opposes redistricting

Community associations aren't usually political, but some in Calgary seem to have taken sides.

A joint letter More than 40 communities in Calgary have signed on to call on city council to vote against the rezoning, saying it doesn't provide affordable options for non-market-rate housing.

“Housing choice has long existed in Calgary. What is missing are non-market housing options. More zoning will not ensure this,” the letter said. “

One of the most recent additions to the list is the Lake Bonavista community, which held an open house session on the issue earlier this week.

The LCBA's open letter says it is deeply concerned about the potential impacts, and they have the potential to impact property values, traffic and public safety.

He is calling on the city council to hold off on any decision until there is a detailed consultation process with all stakeholders.

Forest Heights, Elbow Park, Shawnessy and Rosedale groups are also asking residents for feedback by a Monday deadline.

The city is considering increasing density in many neighborhoods that currently only allow single-family housing.

The proposed change builds on recommendations from the housing strategy approved in September.

On April 22, the Council will hold a public hearing on the rezoning.
