Auto Theft: Police say a Mississauga rental car agency has turned in stolen vehicles

Police have seized 22 stolen vehicles following an investigation into a Mississauga car rental business.

Police said officers began investigating the business in 2023 after receiving information that the owner/operator was repossessing stolen vehicles and renting them out to unsuspecting customers.

Police further say that most of the vehicles were stolen from residential driveways while being rented out.

This, police said, allowed the landlord to collect payments from the landlord's insurance companies for the vehicles.

“It was later found that these vehicles were re-registered and re-screwed by the rental company,” the police said in a statement.

According to the police, as a result of the investigation, 22 stolen vehicles with a total value of 1.6 million dollars were seized.

Two people were also arrested.

Tamer El Gamal, 46, of Mississauga, is charged with 41 felonies, including 22 counts of criminal possession of property.

Mohamed El Gamal, 38, of Mississauga, is charged with 27 counts, including 9 counts of possession of criminal property.

Police said the investigation was conducted in partnership with various insurance agencies as well as the Automotive Industry Council of Ontario.

Authorities say the investigation resulted in a number of insurance companies evading “fraudulent insurance payments.”
