Winnipeg students win national research competition

“Many students feel the impact of climate change on their lives and communities,” he says Marian Bolla, Head of the National Education Department of DUC. “The case study competition is an opportunity for them to engage with current climate issues and think critically about solutions.”

The winning team is the Fort Richmond Wetlands Center Winnipeg includes Hamza Haque, Haider Ali and Muhammad Zaid Irfan. Their innovative approach to wildfire management was to create a flow diagram for communities to find the best wildfire solution for their area. They used maps showing wildfire frequency, forest cover, wetlands and population density to inform their flow diagram.

“All of us were surprised by the flow diagram. It was like what we saw in an official government presentation,” he says. Rick Murraybased judge and specialist in DUC's conservation programs Grande Prairie, Alta.

“We wanted people to be able to find a fire management solution tailored to their location, which is the most important thing,” says Hamza, one of the winners. “We're really proud of what we've done.”

“I cried when I saw them,” he says Jennifer Piasecki, a science teacher at Fort Richmond College. “The improvement from where they started has been incredible. I'm proud of them.”
