Toronto Weather: Heavy rain and wind on Friday

The Greater Toronto Area is in for another wet and windy day on Friday, with rain and strong winds in the forecast.

A rainfall warning remains in place for the city, with an additional 10-15mm of rain expected this morning in addition to last night's heavy rain. Environment Canada says some areas of the city will see a total of 50 mm.

“Heavy rain is likely to cause flooding and waterlogging on roads. Localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas,” Environment Canada said in an advisory.

Some roads and highways around the city were heavily waterlogged on Friday morning, but no serious collisions have been reported so far.

The city said heavy rain early Friday was the cause bypassing waste water At the Humber Treatment Plant.

“All wastewater is disinfected and treated in accordance with strict provincial and federal regulations,” the city said in a statement on Site X.

Rainfall is expected to taper off this morning or early afternoon.

A special weather statement, also in effect for the city, warns of wind gusts of 70-80 km/h tonight. Winds are expected to ease Saturday morning as the low pressure system moves out of the area.

“Strong gusts of wind can throw loose objects or cause tree branches to break,” Environment Canada said. Strong winds can also cause power outages, the agency said.

As for temperatures, Toronto is expected to reach a high of 12 degrees on Friday, dropping to 4 degrees overnight.

Saturday is expected to have a 40% chance of rain, partly sunny skies and a high of 10°C. Temperatures will rise to 15 degrees on Sunday, with a 30 percent chance of rain.

A warm and sunny start to next week is expected, with highs of 16 and 17 degrees on Monday and Tuesday. More rain is in store for Wednesday and Thursday, but temperatures are expected to remain in the high teens.
