Spring cleaning in Winnipeg begins

Hundreds of workers and equipment will be taking to the streets of Winnipeg for the city's annual spring cleanup.

The city's press release said the annual city-wide spring weekend will begin on April 14.

Winnipeg's entire street network will be cleaned over six weeks, including roads, bridges, sidewalks and roads.

Boulevards and medians along major routes will also be tidied up, and trash and debris will be cleared from city parks.

The city management says that the operation was possible thanks to more than 300 machines and about 500 workers.

To help with the effort, Winnipeggers are asked to observe spring cleaning parking restrictions, check their streets for parking signs and move vehicles when necessary to avoid a ticket or towing.

The city cautions that it won't install temporary no-parking signs everywhere, but it will install them on routes where it knows parked cars will be a problem for crews.

Parking in these areas is illegal and vehicles found in violation may receive a $150 ticket and be towed at the owner's expense.

The city says tickets can be sent by mail, not cars.

Anyone who believes their vehicle has been towed should call 311 to find out its location.

More information about spring Saturday in the city can be found on the city's website.

The city's yard waste collection program will begin this month

The annual yard waste collection program begins on April 29 for homes in Yard Waste Collection District A and May 6 for homes in Yard Waste Collection District B.

Residents are encouraged not to rake yard waste or other debris into the streets, as this can clog drains and cause ponding problems, as well as increasing the risk of basement flooding.

The city authorities say that garbage should be taken out for regular collection. Compostable yard materials such as grass clippings or leaves can be placed in any reusable container without lids, cardboard boxes, or paper boxes for yard waste collection.

Two city councils want to increase yard waste collection in Winnipeg.

Residents can also drop off yard waste for free at any of the city's 4R Winnipeg drop-off locations.

Yard waste was collected on the same day as recycling and garbage once every two weeks, officials said.

Residents can find out the date of yard waste collection by calling 311 or visiting the city's website.
