Protesters are demanding justice after a Quebec man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend

The 27-year-old woman found dead in Candiac on Tuesday was Josianne Faucher, who recently broke up with the boyfriend accused of killing her.

She worked at a bank and, according to an interview her sister gave to TVA Nouvelles, she was trying to get out of a toxic relationship.

He was found dead in his apartment on rue Toulouse just before noon on Tuesday. The next day, police arrested 38-year-old David Tota.

Faucher became the ninth femicide victim in Quebec since the beginning of the year, and today there was a protest outside the Longueuil courthouse by those who work to protect and help victims of spousal violence.

“It's very sad because it doesn't seem like he deserves it,” said Kim Arbelastey, an attorney for the women. “You know, was she married to this person or was she just in a relationship and she lost her life. So she lost everything that she could live for her dreams, her values.”

Faucher's social media profile is filled with pictures of her traveling with a man 10 years her senior. It also reveals that she broke up with her boyfriend but they are still living together and she started seeing another guy.

The man accused of killing Faucher is due back in court on Friday, but that will bring little comfort to the women who have spent years exposing this form of abuse.

“It's very sad to hear this again,” said Tanya Hough, the women's attorney. “Someone else was killed. Someone else, you know, maybe it could have been prevented, you know, and that's what we want to do. We want to help these women.”
