Pick 6: Houston takes skills to Calgary

Demerio Houston hopes to do what he did to the Calgary Stampeders in 2024 against them in 2023.

The star quarterback picked up his first career pick-six last season against the Stamps and will now join forces with the Red and White to complement a strong defense in Southern Alberta.

Houston's ability to steal the ball gives defensive coordinator Brent Monson another weapon to pair with the likes of Cameron Judge and Mike Rose to build a dangerous unit that looks to stay in the West Division's contention.

The veteran told CFL.ca about joining the Calgary Stampedes at the CFL Content Shoot, meeting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, his goals for 2024 and more. said about

Q: What do you think brought the Stampeders defense after joining in the offseason?

A: Play my game, attend coaching and learn the new system. Be the player I was and raise my game, try to get more production and be the person they want me to be.

Q: What will it be like to face the Blue Bombers next season?

A: These games are still on my calendar. It's going to be a bit bittersweet going up against my former team that I've been with my entire professional career. Going up against guys that I usually go up against in practice, it's going to be the real deal.

I am happy for him. I know whenever Calgary and Winnipeg play it's always a good game, so it's a blessing to still be in that rivalry, but on the other side of it.

Q: What about going up against Zach Collaros?

A: He's definitely a smart defender. He has a great group of smart receivers around him. I'm ready to put it online. (Collaros) See if I can (catch) one.

Q: What was your favorite game of the 2023 season?

A: Probably the pick six against Calgary because even though it was against my new team, it was a big milestone for me in my career. It is my first choice professionally, so the milestone will always be with me.

Q: Will you let your new teammates hear about it?

A: I hope they will forgive me for this, we are on the same team now.

Q: What makes a young quarterback stand out in the CFL?

A: Manufacturing. You must have production. Everyone, fans, open your eyes and get to work. Dedication, film study. You have to make sure your body is in good shape so you can last a long season. Always take advantage of the opportunity. That's what I do.
