Homan beats Jones to stay in the Players Championship

TORONTO – Rachel Homan remained perfect as she beat Jennifer Jones 8-3 in Thursday night's draw at the Season Players Championship Grand Slam of Curling.

Tied 2-2 after three ends, Homan's Ottawa rink took a 5-2 lead after the fifth. Jones took one point in the sixth and Homan responded with three points in the seventh to win the final of this year's Canadian Women's Championship.

Homan, who led Canada to the world women's curling title last month, defeated Silvana Tirinzoni 4-0 in the women's tournament.

In Thursday's second tie, Swiss skip Gimli, Man., defeated Kerry Einarson (0-3) 7-3.

Jones, a six-time Canadian champion, two-time world champion, Olympic gold medalist and 17-time Grand Slam winner, will retire from curling after this tournament. His Winnipeg rink fell to 1-3.

In 11 other draw results, Brad Jacobs, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., (2-2) beat Edmonton's Brendan Boettcher (1-3) 6-5, Scotland's Ross White (3-1) took a 7-5 decision over Switzerland's Yannick Schwaller (1-3) and the South Korean. Gim Yoon-ji (3-1) defeated Ksenia Schwaller (1-3) of Switzerland 5-4.

Homan defeated Sweden's Isabella Vrana 7-4 on Thursday.

Homan had a steal each in the sixth and seventh ends to take the lead in what had been a back-and-forth affair thus far.

Vrana improved her record to 3-1 with an 8-7 win over Sweden's Anna Hasselborg (1-2) in Thursday's afternoon tie. The game was tied 7-7 after seven legs, but Vrana got the hammer in the eighth and made it count.

In other results from the afternoon session, Mike McEwen scored a single in the ninth inning to improve to 3-0 after beating Winnipegger Matt Dunston (1-2) 6-5. Team McEwen is the last undefeated team in the men's competition.

Scotland's Bruce Mowat bounced back from a 5-3 loss to Bottcher to defeat world men's champion Niklas Edin of Sweden 7-5. The result improves Mouat's record to 3-1, while Edin drops to 1-2.

South Korea's Kim Yunjun (3-1) earned her second win of the day with a 4-3 win over Winnipeg's Caitlin Lowes. Lowes saw his record drop to 0-3.

In Thursday's second draw, world men's silver medalist Brad Gushue of St. John's, NL improved to 2-1 with a 6-1 win over Calgary's Kevin Coe (1-2); Italy's Joel Retornaz (2-2) defeated Scotland's James Craik (1-2) 8-4; and Stefania Constantini (1-2) of Italy defeated Satsuke Fujisawa (1-3) of Japan 8-5.

In the morning draws, White scored five goals in the opening two games as they beat Dunstone 7-2, while Kim thrashed Gim 8-1 in a meeting between the South Korean teams.
