A new MEI-Ipsos survey found that 50% of Canadians say they are dissatisfied with their provincial health care system, with sentiment highest in the Atlantic provinces, where two in three are dissatisfied.

The survey also found that six in 10 Canadians believe the rate of growth in health care spending is unsustainable, while only one-quarter believe that the increase in health care spending over the past decade has had a positive effect.

The survey found that 52% agree with the idea of ​​greater access to private health care, while 29% oppose it.

“People are realizing that the endless waiting lists that characterize our government-run health care systems will not be solved by yet another bureaucratic reform,” said MEI economist Emmanuel B. Faubert stated.

“They will see that we don't have the waiting time in mixed systems that allow more room for independent health care providers elsewhere in the world.”

The idea of ​​allowing greater access to private health care is particularly popular in Quebec, with 65% of respondents supporting it.

The poll also found that almost 73% of Quebecers support the Legault government's project for small, independently managed hospitals, while 17% oppose it.

“Quebecers' support for the independent small hospital project is very strong,” Faubert said. “People have high hopes for this project and its final version should be in line with what was promised in the last election.”

Between March 22 and 27, 2024, a sample of 1,116 Canadians aged 18 and over was polled 19 times out of 20, with a margin of error of ± 3.3 percentage points.
