10 people are stuck on a wheel in a Toronto mall

Toronto firefighters rescued 10 people trapped on board a Ferris wheel at Woodbine Mall Thursday afternoon after it malfunctioned.

Crews were called to the amusement park inside the shopping center in the area of Rexdale Boulevard and Highway 27 just before 2 p.m.

Crews at the home tried to fix the ferris wheel when it stopped, but were unsuccessful, according to Toronto Fire.

“We had four trucks, and our crews were knowledgeable enough to get out and use the lifting devices, so we were able to get people out of the ferris wheel,” said platoon leader Chris Rowland.

After about an hour, firefighters were able to rescue all 10 riders.

“By shutting off the power to the landing gear, it allowed gravity to pull the people down and we were able to get them off safely,” Rowland said.

“The people trapped were never in danger.”

It is unclear what caused the vehicle to stall. According to the mall's website, the Ferris wheel is about 50 feet tall.
